Christian Education: Adults

Throughout the year we offer a rich variety of classes for adults.

The Book of Joy – starts Wednesday February 1st

Our fourth Adult Education session will start Wednesday February 1st from 7-8pm (note – we will meet Wednesday, not Thursday.)   Many thanks to parishioner Frank Manley who will lead our discussion of the recently published New York Times bestseller, The Book of Joy, by His Holiness the Dali Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

“In The Book of Joy, they look back on their long lives to answer a single burning question:  How do we find joy in the face of life’s inevitable suffering?  In the book, we’ll explore the Nature of True Joy and confront each of the Obstacles of Joy—then offer us the Eight Pillars of Joy – and finally, they share their daily Joy Practices that anchor their own emotional and spiritual lives.”    (from Penguin Random House online review)

Join us as we discuss what joy means in our Christian lives?  Is there a difference between joy and happiness?  How can we experience great pain and loss or even the prospect of our own death and still be joyful?

Our guides on this journey are two men whom many regard as the Spiritual Giants of our day.  Archbishop Desmond Tutu, an Anglican, has a deep and profound Christian faith.  His Holiness the Dalai Lama, a Buddhist monk, refers to himself as a non-theist (does not believe in God.) They have both found great joy following almost identical paths.

Wednesday evenings from 7-8pm – February 1 through 22 – meeting in Old Parish House.  Books will be available in the church office, for you to buy.  You’re welcome to attend one or all 4 evenings and please invite community members too.   Questions: Beth Healy phone 827-3618 or email

What is EfM? It is a four-year course that participants sign up for one year at a time. Year One covers the Old Testament; Year Two, the New Testament; Year Three, the history of Christianity; and Year Four, theology.

But EfM is different than an academic course.

What is the purpose of EfM? EfM provides a comprehensive, experiential education in the foundations and message of our Christian faith.

Why do people participate in EfM? EfM invites people into small, mentored communities that help us understand our lives and shape our actions as we deepen our Christian faith.

To learn more about the course, contact Marilyn Weir or anyone who has participated in EfM. To sign up, please contact Marilyn at   or 924-3405.
